I am not flexible nor into sports...

I hear it a lot on the phone: "Well, I would love to do yoga but I am not flexible or into sports". Until recently I die not realize why people asked told me this. Because yoga is not about being flexible or into sports.

And then I joined a big yoga event. It was very nicely organized with live music. And it was a real work-out: we would go from one intense into another with nog breaks. That class moved to fast that at a certain point I did not enjoy it anymore...

And while practicing during that class I realized "I will have some seriously stiff muscles tomorrow". And yes I was right about that one. The day after I practiced yoga my way in order to get rid of the stiffness of that intense work out yoga.

Thanks to this event I understand why people ask me this question :-)

But if you are not flexible and into sports things can be different. I have been lucky to get connected with teachers who give their classes from the essence of the yoga. From here in Belgium to all the way in India where I followed my yoga teacher training.

While practicing essential yoga you go into the poses with slow and controlled movements and the poses are maintained for a while you continue to breath very consciously. When you practice the poses like this you will notice after a while that you will become more flexible and that you get into a better shape.

The 8-fold yoga path

Practicing the poses i only on of the 8 aspects of yoga:

     1) Yama's: sociale disciplin

     2) Niyama's: self-discipline

     3) Asana's: physical poses

     4) Pranayama: control of energy

     5) Pratyahara: isolation of the senses

     6) Dharana: concentration

     7) Dhyana: meditation

     8) Samadhi: the ultimate enlightenment

It is logical to start with number 3 the poses. It is the most visible and tangible aspect of the yoga. After a while you will notice that while intensifying your practice it will automatically extent to the other aspects of the yoga as well.

On the page “The 8 steps of yoga” you will find a detailed description of the different aspects of the 8-fold yoga path.

Hari Om, thank you for the yoga :-)

I am not flexible nor into sports...
